It’s a huge weekend for the New York Shockers as both the men’s and women’s teams prepare to play on Saturday. The men will play home at Afrim’s Sports Park, as the women will remain on the road as they head up to Vermont. Here’s what to expect from both matchups.
If you needed more of an incentive to show out for the men’s home game, you’re in luck. Pinnacle Roofing Inc. is sponsoring a pregame tailgate at Afrim’s starting at 5:30 p.m. Not only will there be corn hole and soccer tennis games set up, there will be free food and the first 100 fans will receive a free New York Shockers T-shirt.
Now let’s talk soccer. The men’s team will be coming off a tough 4-3 loss after their highly competitive matchup with Valeo FC. The Shockers will be facing Hartford City for the second time this regular season tomorrow night. In their first face off, the Shockers took home the victory after attacker Wisdom Ishaya scored the late game winning goal in the 80th minute.
Ishaya has found more success on offensive beyond this matchup, as he recorded his second goal of the season last weekend vs. Valeo FC.
Shockers forward Adetayo Adefioye is currently leading the squad statistically with 5 goals scored thus far. Adefioye is ranked fourth for goals scoring leaders in the East Region, and was recently named to the NPSL May Team of the Month.
Even after their recent loss and having a split record of 3-3, the Shockers have proved to be present in every game both offensively and defensively. With more games played and goals scored, the chances look good that the fifth place Shockers can take the victory over third place Hartford FC once again.
The Women’s Shockers will head to Applejack Stadium to face the Vermont Fusion for the second time this regular season. The Shockers hosted the Fusion for their inaugural WPSL matchup in late May, which resulted in a 0-0 draw.
Despite being dealt a 3-0 loss from Westchester FC at their first away game last weekend, the newly founded Shockers have proven to build chemistry and make connections on their offensive line.
In their second matchup against the Rhode Island Rogues; which was also their first victory of the season. Froward Dora Hayes headed the ball into the back of the net in the 10th minute to get the Shockers on the board early. In case you missed it, Amber Yarter took this fire video of the play.
Katrina Kurtz netted another before the end of the first half after midfielder Ashley Cirilla slid a perfect pass through the Rogues defense from the left wing.
The Shockers record currently sits at 1-1-1. With three matches under their belts, hopefully the fifth place Shockers can find the back of the net against the fifth place Fusion tomorrow night.
If you can’t make it to either of the Shockers’ matchups, you can stream both here. And of course, you know we’ll have live game updates on Any Given Funday’s social media platforms. Let’s go Shockers, and make sure you let the fundays roll!
